Dr Mia Shepherdson is a General Surgery Registrar with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and an Associate Lecturer at Flinders University.
Mia completed a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) at Flinders University in 2017. Her honours thesis investigated the role of mTOR in regulating microRNA expression and exosome secretion in breast cancer cells, reflecting an early commitment to translational research.
In 2018, she commenced a Doctor of Medicine at Flinders University and subsequently undertook her internship in 2022. During her intern year, she completed a Master of Surgery through the University of Sydney, with a dissertation examining the incidence and survival outcomes of young-onset gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma.
In 2025, Mia commenced General Surgery SET training and continues to contribute actively to both clinical practice and academic research. She is currently undertaking a research semester in Copenhagen with the Danish Cancer Society (Kræftens Bekæmpelse), further advancing her work in oncological research.
In her role as an Associate Lecturer at Flinders University, she is actively engaged in medical education through mentoring students and facilitating case-based tutorials. Her teaching contributions have included serving as a facilitator of General Surgery problem-based learning (PBL) sessions, tutor for Cadaveric Dissection and OSCE Examiner. She has also contributed to student selection as a Doctor of Medicine admission interview panellist and currently serves as an MD Learning Coach, providing academic guidance and support to medical students throughout their training.
