Research Fellow
College of Science and Engineering
Michael received his BSc at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He then completed a joint PhD at the University of California Davis and San Diego State University, exploring the elasmobranch holobiont. He moved to Sydney, Australia, for his first post-doctoral position studying the patterns of microbial communities from long-term oceanographic datasets. Currently, he is a research fellow at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia working in the Flinders Accelerators for Microbiome Exploration (FAME) under Professor Elizabeth Dinsdale and Professor Rob Edwards. His role includes managing up to 15 projects within the FAME group, helping Flinders researchers to navigate microbiome studies from sample collection, bioinformatic assistance, and manuscript development. His research focus includes examining the ecological patterns of the host microbiome. He is an expert in metagenomics, developing laboratory and field methods enabling the study of microbes from the environment. He has supervised four honours students and one PhD student.
Michael has extensive experience leading boat and SCUBA-based field expeditions. He is an AAUS-certified diver with over 300 hrs of dive time across 400 dives. His fieldwork has taken him to every continent, establishing a vast base of international collaborators. In his free time, he enjoys marine-based activities, including free diving and surfing.
Michael has a BSc in Integrative Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a joint PhD in Ecology from the University of California Davis and San Diego State University. He has published 26 scientific papers, coordinated Marine and Freshwater Ecology at Flinders and lectures on topics on microbial ecology.
Michael manages the FAME-based projects, liaising with researchers to facilitate their DNA sequencing needs. These responsibilities include project and sample design, laboratory procedures, bioinformatic assistance, and manuscript development. Projects include a variety of DNA sequencing approaches, including next-generation sequencing with Illumina, MGI, and Oxford Nanopore and traditional PCR and qPCR to address microbial, viral, and environmental DNA-based questions.
Michael’s teaching focus includes general marine and microbial ecology. These courses include field and laboratory components for hands-on student experiences. He has co-led a field course in the Maldives, providing students with in-water experience and conducting research in marine settings. He has also lectured on bioinformatic topics. Michael is open to collaborations and keen to discuss new projects.
Michael is the Flinders Accelerator for Microbiome Exploration (FAME) Liaison, coordinating the University-wide initiative to promote and enhance microbiome and metagenomic studies across Flinders University, Adelaide, and South Australia. His role is to work directly with researchers in developing, managing, and helping to complete their projects. He is currently overseeing 15 projects supported by the Flinders FAME initiative. Michael has vast experience with data generation (DNA sequencing), metagenomic/bioinformatic analysis, and statistics. He is happy to help with any aspects of DNA-based projects.
Michael is a member of the International Society of Microbial Ecology, the Australia Elasmobranch Society, and the Society for Microbiology.
