Rocco is the Professor and Head of Engineering at Flinders University, a position that he took up in August 2021. Previous to this position Rocco was the Professor and Head of Civil Engineering at Flinders University. As a part of this leadership role he manages numerous research projects and teaching programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. His research interests include the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) for transportation applications. This research work has mainly involved the use of Intelligent Transport System technologies to improve the effectiveness of transport. He also has a background in the assessment and investigation of the environmental impacts of various transport policy initiatives, including the use of alternative fuels and vehicles. Rocco is currently also heavily involved in connected and autonomous vehicle research and trials.

Awarded an Australian Academy of Technological Sciences Early Career Symposium Fellowship to attend the Alternative Transport Fuels for Australia November Symposium, Melbourne, November 2008.
1999 Young Transport Professional of the Year, awarded by the Chartered Institute of Transport in Australia, South Australian Section, for the work performed in GPS and GIS applications and environmental modelling.
Rocco has the responsibility of representing Flinders engineering educational and research activities externally particularly where it is required by an external body for course accreditation or other purposes. As Head of Engineering he will be an active educator who focuses on the integrity of the course(s) for the purpose of their external recognition and an active researcher who can represent the interests of the University at professional meetings.
As Head of Engineering Rocco also engages with student, community and professional stakeholders to promote a strong, positive profile for the College’s educational and research endeavours within the University and externally, with the expectation of participation in local and international activities that promote the engineering education programs and research.
In addition, Rocco works collaboratively with the College Leaders, Professoriate, course coordinators, academic and professional staff to effectively promote the identified academic strengths of the engineering courses, particularly their recognition in the external community.
Rocco has been teaching at the undergraduate and post graduate level in Civil and Transport Systems Engineering for over 30 years.
