Ruth Canty is a PhD candidate in Public Health based in Darwin, Northern Territory. Her research focuses on tobacco retail and tobacco policy in the NT, with a particular interest in understanding the system-level changes needed to reduce smoking prevalence and prevent smoking uptake. Tobacco control is a critical public health priority in the NT, where smoking rates remain among the highest in Australia. Ruth’s work aims to inform policies that create healthier environments and improve long-term health outcomes for communities across the Territory, reflecting her commitment to addressing complex health challenges through evidence-informed policy.

She holds a BSc in Biochemistry (2001) and an MSc (2005). After moving to Australia in 2014, Ruth shifted her career toward public health, completing a Master of Public Health before commencing her PhD.

Ruth is developing her expertise as a qualitative researcher and in her PhD is using in-depth interviews and policy analysis, to explore how regulatory frameworks, retail practices, and community perspectives intersect. By examining these dynamics, she seeks to identify practical and sustainable strategies for reducing tobacco-related harm.
