Lumley Top Up Scholarship

Description

The Lumley Top-up Scholarships Program supports students commencing their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2026. The Foundation is seeking to support individuals from any discipline undertaking their PhD on a topic that aligns with at least three of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has the potential to contribute to systemic change for health access and welfare outcomes. 

Benefits

This Top-Up Scholarship offers:

• $18,000 per year for up to 3.5 years or the completion of their candidature (whichever date is soonest), to a total maximum value of $63,000
• admission to a growing network of ‘Lumley Scholars’, with shared areas of research interest
• opportunities to connect with the broader Foundation and its network, to share your work, enhance your skills and build opportunities to progress your research career.

Scholarship funds are intended to support all reasonable costs associated with the recipient’s capacity to undertake their research and successfully complete their PhD. This may include but is not limited to:

• essential living expenses,
• costs of research and materials,
• research-related travel,
• costs associated with conferences, or
• essential self-care. 

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, candidates must:

• already be in possession of a primary scholarship at Flinders University awarded on the basis of an open and competitive selection process
• be commencing their Doctor of Philosophy in 2026
• be enrolled in and commence their PhD full-time and within 12 months of submitting their application
• have a PhD topic aligned with the Foundation’s specified Area of Focus (at least three of the SDGs with the potential to contribute to systemic change for health access and welfare outcomes)
• hold South Australia as their primary place of residence for the duration of their PhD studies, and
• agree to abide by the Conditions of Award.

Applications will primarily be assessed based on the relevance of the applicant’s topic to the Foundation’s nominated area of focus and its potential for impact.

In the event of having more strong applications than are available, the applicant’s individual circumstances and need, with consideration to applicants who might otherwise experience barriers to the timely completion of their PhD without the Foundation’s support, may contribute to the Foundation’s final decision making when selecting successful applications.

Selection Criteria

Final decisions regarding scholarships will be made by the Council of the Kathleen Lumley Foundation. Decisions will be at the discretion of the Foundation and will not be open to appeal.

Lodgement of an application for this top up scholarship is confirmation of consent for the application form and information such as is required for the effective administration of the program to be shared with the Kathleen Lumley Foundation.
