Description
The FA & MF Joyner Scholarships in Medicine, Science, Fine Arts, and Law (hereafter referred to as ‘the Scholarships’) has been established to encourage postgraduate and other advanced research of original or progressive nature leading to advancement of knowledge in any branch or aspect of Medicine, Science, Fine Arts, and Law.
The nature of the Scholarship shall be determined by Australian Executor Trustees Limited in consultation with The University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia and any other South Australian university with a research degree in an appropriate area (hereafter referred to as ‘the Universities’). The Scholarship will be dependent on the available income and is to be available from time to time as funds permit. The Scholarship will be administered by a committee comprising representatives from the Universities.
The rules of the FA & MF Joyner Scholarships may be varied from time to time by Australian Executor Trustees Limited in consultation and on the recommendation of the Universities, but the name and the general purpose of the Scholarship shall not be changed.
Benefits
The stipend will be 10% above the minimum Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship (RTPS) (or equivalent award) stipend rate per annum, subject to indexation in accordance with movements in the stipend of the RTP. Under present taxation law the stipend is expected to be tax exempt.
For candidates undertaking a program in Medicine, the stipend will be 10% above the NHMRC Medical Postgraduate Research Scholarship (or equivalent award) stipend per annum subject to indexation in accordance with movements in the stipend of the NHMRC Scholarship.
Eligibility
a. in the absence of suitably qualified applicants, applicants with a high Second Class (Division A) Honours degree or an equivalent level of academic attainment may be considered; however, any award to applicants in this category will be at the absolute discretion of Australian Executor Trustees
a. Fine Arts – applications in the following areas only will be considered:
i. Pictorial (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography)
ii. Plastics
iii. New media
iv. Jewellery
v. Textiles
vi. Sculptural
vii. Film
viii. Performance
ix. Digital media
x. Glass
Note: Art history, curatorial studies or drama are NOT considered Fine Arts for the purposes of this scholarship.
b. Medicine – applications in allied health will NOT be considered. Final decision on a field appropriate to Medicine will be at the discretion of the selection panel and on a case by case basis, and may include areas such as biomedical science and genetics.
c. Science – applications in the following areas will NOT be considered:
i. Computer Science
ii. Engineering
Selection Criteria
A short list of eligible applicants, in order of merit, will be developed within each of the Universities.
The successful applicant will be the highest ranked applicant in an appropriate discipline from one of the Universities. The successful applicant will be selected on the grounds of academic merit and research potential by Australian Executor Trustees Limited on the recommendation of a designated Selection Committee who will place all suitable applicants into a single order of merit. The Selection Committee’s recommendation, together with a reserve list, shall be forwarded to Australian Executor Trustees Limited for its consideration and determination.
The Selection Committee will comprise one administrative representative from each of the Universities and the appropriate Dean (or equivalent) or their nominees from each of the Universities.
Students completing Honours in the year of scholarship application are eligible to apply. Prior to the Committee Meeting to determine recipients of the award the Scholarship Office will seek predicted Honors scores for ranking. Students with predicted Honors scores will not be awarded a scholarship until their Honours degree is completed.

One application will apply for both the AGRTPS, the FURS and any other scholarship opportunities that may be available during the round.
