Meeting students at the centre: re-thinking our AALL practice

This conference we invite you to reflect on how our ALL practice and our work with students has evolved.

As part of this, we will consider: who are our students and how do we engage with them as partners; the benefits, challenges, and nuances of a range of ALL models; what’s different about the work we do in this third ALL space; how we can promote student wellbeing and inclusivity; and, how do we privilege the student voice and identify what it is that they need from us?

Therefore, we encourage enabling education academics, English language teachers, curriculum specialists, Indigenous education practitioners and students, who are all consumers of ALL practices, to consider sharing their experiences at the AALL 2023 conference, to be held virtually and hosted by Flinders University from November 22-24, 2023.

Workshop proposals:

We seek proposals for 60-minute interactive workshops that provide opportunities for participants to explore innovations in practice, related to one of the four conference themes.

  • 50-word facilitator bio
  • The conference theme the workshop aligns with

Themes:

Student Voices

This theme aims to privilege the student voice. Students are at the centre of what we do, so how can we best serve them? We invite papers on the following:

  • Who are our students in higher education? How is this changing or evolving? What does it mean for our ALL practice?
  • How do we ensure we privilege, include and hear from all student voices?
  • What do students need from ALL practitioners?
  • How do we privilege student voices in an online as well as a face-to-face setting?

The third space: ALL models in practice

ALL practitioners exist in a third space—outside of disciplines, yet inevitably also situated within them in our interactions with students. Finding ways of working effectively within this space and adapting to changes in the higher education environment more broadly is a key aspect of our roles. We invite papers that explore the following topics:

  • Who are we as practitioners?
  • What are the range of AALL practice models currently operating across HE institutions and how do we meet students at the centre of our practice?
  • What works/doesn’t work?
  • What needs to change or innovate?
  • What is the future of our practice?
  • And, relatedly: how do AI-content generators (e.g., ChatGPT) affect the future of our practice?
  • How do/can our discipline backgrounds inform or enhance our practice?

Students as Partners

This theme interrogates what ‘students-as-partners’ really means for teaching practice in higher education, and how it can authentically and effectively be implemented in the ALL space. We invite papers that explore the following topics:

  • What does it mean to work with students as partners?
  • How do we engage students as partners in the ALL space?
  • Practice papers showcasing examples of ALL practice engaging students as partners

Student Wellbeing and ALL

This theme questions the intersection of student wellbeing with our ALL practice. We encourage papers that consider the following:

  • How does student wellbeing intersect with our work as ALL practitioners?
  • Student wellbeing across the student lifecycle.
  • How do we manage accidental counselling in the ALL role?

We especially encourage students to submit proposals for any of the above themes—we want to hear from you! Please circulate this CFP among your networks and with anyone you think may be interested in presenting.

Please email an abstract of no more than 250 words, along with a 50-word bio, to admin@aall.org.au.

The CFP deadline has been extended to 11:59pm (ACST) Thursday, 15th June.

2023 JALL Conference Special Issue: Information for Presenters

Presenters at AALL’s biennial conference who are considering publishing a scholarly paper on their work are encouraged to consider publishing an associated paper in JALL’s Conference Special Issue.

More information keyboard_arrow_up

Some of the key benefits to authors of publishing in JALL include:

  1. timely publication: the Conference Special Issue is generally published shortly after the conference
  2. high visibility (see http://journal.aall.org.au/index.php/jall/article/view/420/249 for JALL download statistics as at November, 2015)
  3. papers in the Conference Special Issue having the same status as regular, peer-reviewed journal articles.

Below provides presenters at the AALL Conference information on how to submit an associated paper for consideration for publication in JALL. The deadline for submission is 30 June 2023.

Notes

  • It is not a requirement for conference presenters to submit, or have accepted for publication, an associated paper to JALL.
  • All submissions to the Conference Special Issue will be double-blind reviewed by two peer reviewers according to the same criteria that regular submissions are (see “Reviewer guidelines” in About the Journal). This is done so that papers in the Conference Special Issue have the same standing as regular peer-reviewed journal articles for author publication records.
  • To make a submission to JALL, authors must be registered as an author with the journal. To register, go to http://journal.aall.org.au/index.php/jall/user/register and complete the form. Be prepared to supply a username and password and remember to select the “Author” check box. At the same time, please also consider registering as a reviewer for the journal.
  • It is preferred that submissions to JALL use the appropriate article template which can be downloaded from the journal website. Note that JALL uses the APA referencing style (examples are available in the style file).
  • The journal uses blinded reviewing, so please ensure your initial submission is “blinded”. In other words, in your initial manuscript, just put “Author Name” and “Author Address” instead of your real name and address in the title block. Also, if within your manuscript you cite previous work of your own, please cite it as “(author, year)” rather than (Jones, 2001) for example.
  • To make a submission,
    a)     log in from the journal’s home page.
    b)     click on the New Submission link.
    c)     For the “Section”, select “Conference Articles”.
    d)     in Step 1 of the submission process, note in the “Comments to Editor” box that “This submission is for the Conference Special Issue.”
    e)     To check on the status of your paper, access reviews, and upload revised manuscripts, return to your Author page and click on the relevant link associated with your submission.
  • If you experience any difficulties with this process, please contact David Rowland at d.rowland@uq.edu.au
