Case Study - Developing Future-Ready Defence Manufacturing Workforces

Australia's Advanced manufacturing technologies are transforming the way defence organisations operate. As automation, robotics and digital systems become more widely adopted, manufacturers must ensure workforce design evolves alongside technological change.

Success depends not only on the technologies being implemented, but on how work is designed, how skills are developed and how employees interact with increasingly sophisticated production systems.

Through a series of workforce-focused research projects, Factory of the Future explored how technology, people and organisational systems can work together to support high-performance manufacturing environments.

The Manufacturing Work By Design project developed practical guidance exploring the relationship between workforce capability, job design and technology adoption in advanced manufacturing settings. Drawing on existing research, the project highlighted how organisations can design jobs that support both productivity and employee wellbeing while helping employees adapt to technological change.  

Complementing this work, the Setting It Straight: Smart Cells for Advanced Manufacturing project explored new approaches to production systems and how digitally enabled manufacturing environments can support more efficient and adaptable operations.

Together, the projects provided practical frameworks for designing quality jobs, developing workforce capability and strengthening organisational readiness for advanced manufacturing transformation.

The projects demonstrated that successful Industry 4.0 adoption requires equal attention to workforce capability and technology implementation. They highlighted the importance of people-centred job design, ensuring technology enhances work rather than simply changing it.

Research findings highlighted the importance of training, organisational culture, workforce engagement and thoughtful job design all play an important role in creating meaningful and satisfying work, while supporting sustainable transformation outcomes and business performance.

The work continues to support defence manufacturers seeking to develop the skills, systems and workplaces needed for the next generation of manufacturing, while showcasing Factory of the Future's capability in workforce innovation and advanced manufacturing transformation.
