During emergency resuscitation, delivering the correct ventilation using a bag valve mask (BVM) is critical but highly challenging. In high-pressure environments, first responders must rely on manual technique to judge air volume and timing—something that is often inaccurate and inconsistent, even for trained professionals.
Incorrect ventilation can lead to serious complications, including under‑ventilation (insufficient oxygen) or over‑ventilation, both of which can negatively impact patient outcomes in critical situations.
The Perfect Squeeze project is a collaboration between South Australian startup Abtulus® and Flinders University’s Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) to develop a novel BVM guidance system.
At the centre of the solution is VentiWatch—a compact ventilation management device that integrates sensor technology, custom circuitry and processing algorithms to measure air volume and ventilation timing in real time.
The system attaches to a standard BVM and provides live feedback via a user-friendly interface, visual display and audible alerts, helping responders deliver precise, consistent ventilation during resuscitation.
Through MDPP support, the concept was refined and developed into a functional prototype, combining engineering expertise with clinical insight to address a critical gap in emergency care.
Perfect Squeeze is transforming how ventilation is delivered in emergency settings by improving accuracy and reducing reliance on guesswork.
By improving the quality and consistency of life-saving ventilation, this innovation has the potential to significantly enhance patient outcomes during resuscitation when every second counts.
