In cardiac arrest situations, every second is critical, yet accurately identifying whether a patient has a pulse can be difficult—even for trained professionals. Manual pulse checks are often slow, stressful and subjective, leading to delays in starting CPR or defibrillation and reducing the chances of survival.
This uncertainty creates a significant barrier in emergency response, particularly for first responders and bystanders who must make rapid, high-stakes decisions under pressure.

Pulse Tile is a collaboration between Australian medtech startup Pulsatile Innovations and Flinders University’s Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP), transforming frontline clinical insight into a practical device solution.
Founded by paramedic Elleesha King, the concept addresses the limitations of manual pulse detection through a compact, easy-to-use device that quickly confirms the presence or absence of a pulse, enabling faster and more confident decision-making.
Through MDPP, the project progressed from concept to a working prototype, with engineers and researchers developing key components including detection algorithms, battery systems and device design, alongside a technical report to support investment and further development.
This collaboration helped position the project for clinical trials, funding, and commercialisation by combining engineering expertise with real-world clinical need.
Pulse Tile has the potential to significantly improve cardiac arrest response by reducing uncertainty and enabling earlier intervention.
By addressing a critical gap in emergency care, Pulse Tile is advancing a scalable, life-saving solution that could improve survival outcomes when every second counts.
