Matthew Flinders Scholarship
Spending eight years in further education across her lifetime, Carole Mackintosh believes in the power of education to change lives.
Having experienced diverse hospital environments, from radiology to midwifery, neonatal care, and anaesthetics, Carole's nursing career represents a commitment to serving others.
Carole says, “I wanted to be useful and do something that would help people.”
Now retired, she’s helping students in financial need at Flinders University by donating to the Matthew Flinders Scholarship.
Carole’s career began with hospital-based training in West London during the 1970s, before she travelled and worked in New Zealand for three years.
She then visited family in Adelaide and says, “I loved it so much I couldn’t leave, and have spent the past 38 years here.”
On settling in Adelaide, Carole embarked on tertiary studies at Flinders University with a Bachelor of Nursing, followed by a Master of Nursing, and a Graduate Certificate in Health.
“By donating to the Matthew Flinders Scholarship, it feels like a great privilege to support the potential of students and our future leaders," says Carole.
With an academic journey spanning the 1980s to the 2000s, Carole reflects on the need to keep up with technology throughout her studies. “When I first studied everything was handwritten, then I bought my first computer in the late 80s to do assignments. By the time I finished studying everything was available online.”
While technology is always on the move, Carole knows that financial pressures while studying can be a constant worry for students across the ages.
“As a mature age student, I worked full-time and studied part-time. I considered myself lucky to be able to support myself financially, but I know that others are not so fortunate.”
Believing in the power of education to change lives, Carole understands the need to support students in financial need, to ensure they finish their degree and can go on to realise their full potential.
“By donating to the Matthew Flinders Scholarship, it feels like a great privilege to support the potential of students and our future leaders.
“Imagine, I could be helping someone who goes on to make new discoveries in science or health that benefit the wider community – what a brighter future that would be for us all.”
Carole’s generosity to the Matthew Flinders Scholarship not only honours her educational journey but paves the way for countless students to fulfil their dreams and impact our society.
