Assoc. Prof. Hooker has a PhD in molecular biology/genetics with research interests in the mechanisms of radiation induced damage. He is the inaugural Director of the Centre for Radiation Research, Education, and Innovation at the University of Adelaide after 12 years as the Principal Radiation Advisor, Radiation Health for the South Australian govt. He has worked and been affiliated with Flinders University since 1995 and has full academic status in the College of Medicine and Public Health.

He is a Fellow and Past President of the Australasian Radiation Protection Society and Member of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine. He has worked in the field of low dose radiobiology since 1996. He has been a CI on research grants, including ARC, international collaborative and industry grants totalling more than $12M. His research and work in radiobiology, health effects, as well as risk communication has been internationally and nationally recognised. He has been invited/nominated to sit on international and national radiation committees such as the National Radiation Health Committee, the Australian and New Zealand Counter Terrorism Committee CBRN Training Advisory Group and the SA CBRN Emergency Management Committee. He is a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a member of OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, High Level Working Group on Low-Dose Research Coordination. He is an Executive Member of the Asia and Oceanic Association for Radiation Protection and is one of only 4 Australians on the International Radiation Protection Agency General Assembly. He provides radiation health advice and radiation risk assessment to the Federal and State govt., industry, and the public, and was an expert witness to the SA Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission (NFCRC) and undertook radiation risk communication for the NFCRC Consultation and Response Agency.

Key responsibilities

I am currently the Director, Centre for Radiation Research, Education and Innovation at the University of Adelaide. I have full academic status at Flinders University within the College of Medicine and Public Health where I maintain my radiation biology interests with our collaborators at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Ontario, Canada as well as the the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, USA. At Flinders, we have a world unique small animal radon facility for undertaking low dose radiation research.
