Emeritus Professor Doug McEvoy AM is changing lives through sleep health research and support.
Having dedicated much of his life to understanding the complexities of sleep and its impact on wellbeing, Emeritus Professor Doug McEvoy AM is changing lives through his support for sleep health research.
Professor McEvoy’s most significant career achievement lies in establishing the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health (now FHMRI Sleep Health) at Flinders University, where for 30 years he led research that has improved the lives of countless people with sleep disorders.
During this time, he mentored many students who have gone on to lead successful, independent research careers. He says, “My greatest sense of fulfilment has come from watching my students and junior colleagues thrive.”
Since his retirement in 2019, Professor McEvoy has taken great satisfaction in witnessing the growth of sleep research at Flinders University – now a world-leading research centre under the leadership of Professor Danny Eckert.
With an unwavering passion for sleep health, Professor McEvoy has donated to support the next generation of researchers at FHMRI Sleep Health, through Flinders newly established Sleep Health ECR Seed Grant.

“Getting a good night’s sleep is fundamentally important to our health and wellbeing. Sadly, many people today suffer from sleep deprivation or sleep disorders, and we need more research to reverse this trend,” says Professor McEvoy.
With thanks to Professor McEvoy and further community support, early career researchers Dr Dayna Easton, Dr Alicia Lander and Dr Ashley Montero were recently awarded the inaugural FHRMI Sleep Health ECR Seed Grant of $15,000 to launch their innovative research study.
The group study, GLEAM: Guided Light and Exercise for Alertness Management, is focused on sleep health biomarkers, risk prevention, circadian health, and technological innovation.
Professor McEvoy hopes his contributions to the seed funding will create a more secure career path for emerging researchers and ensure continued innovation in sleep health – leading to a healthier, more rested future for all.
