Matthew Flinders Scholarship
For Taylor Booker, becoming an occupational therapist was a calling to help others overcome physical barriers to achieving their goals – but first she had to overcome her own challenges to achieving her degree.
With an intense study commitment of five years, Taylor knew that maintaining a work-life-study balance during her Master of Occupational Therapy at Flinders University was going to be difficult.
Like many students, Taylor felt the growing pressure of the cost-of-living crisis and needed to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. She says juggling the responsibilities of study and work, while supporting her own health and quality of life was her biggest challenge.
“I began studying to make a difference in the lives of people in the community but I've gone through a lot to get here.”
Taylor reached breaking point when she faced her final, eight-week, unpaid work placement at Brain Injury SA in Elizabeth – involving a daily, three-hour return trip from her home.
“The Matthew Flinders Scholarship provided
great peace of mind during my placement
and allowed me to focus more time and
energy on my studies,” says Taylor.
“The placement cost an extra $120 in fuel each week, plus there were mounting expenses from not being able to work my casual jobs while on the full-time placement,” says Taylor. “I was looking at also working every weekend just to get by, but I was worried about burning out.”
Arriving just in time to relieve the building pressures, Taylor received the Matthew Flinders Scholarship for students in financial need and was able to cover her extra placement costs.
“Covering my fuel, food, rent and bills, the Matthew Flinders Scholarship provided great peace of mind during my placement and allowed me to focus more time and energy on my studies.”
Achieving her Master of Occupational Therapy at the end of last year, Taylor is now forging a career in community occupational therapy, helping to improve independence and quality of life for children and older adults.
She is grateful to those who helped her reach this point, especially the donors to the Matthew Flinders Scholarship.
“Your support was the extra push I needed to get to the finish line and made a difficult year a little bit brighter. Thank you so very much for your kindness.”
