APPLICATION

Job advertisements are listed on our website and other jobs board like SEEK, LinkedIn and UniJobs.

Job advertisements on our website (Jobs@Flinders) contain a link to the relevant position description,
contact person and other handy information about working for Flinders University.

All applications need to be lodged via the "Apply" button on the Jobs@Flinders page.
Once you've submitted an application, you'll get an email confirming we've received it.

Be sure to apply before the closing date, as we may not accept late submissions.

SHORTLISTING

Your application will be reviewed against the selection criteria to determine if your skills, abilities and experience are a match.
We may call you at this point, to clarify some details from your CV or Suitability statement.

INTERVIEWS

If your application is shortlisted we'll be in touch to arrange an interview.
Our interviews are in panel form, so (generally), you will be meeting with 3 people.

We'll ask about your skills, abilities and experience relevant to the role.
It's also an opportunity for you to find out more about the role and Flinders University, including our culture and values

REFERENCE CHECK

Once all of the interviews have been completed, the selection panel will meet to discuss the suitability
of each of the candidates and commence reference checks.

BACKGROUND CHECK & OFFER

If you're successful, you'll get a verbal offer followed by a formal contract. Before you commence, you will need a Police Clearance, and in some cases, a Working with Children Check/Ochre Card. Our Recruitment team can help you with this

Our Processes

We follow a series of steps to ensure we get the right talent on board. Our application experience includes an online application, interview, reference checks, and background checks. Telephone interviews may also be used in our recruitment and selection process.

Screening

We want to find the best people out there for our team – so our recruitment specialists and Selection Panel’s carefully assess your skills and experience.

Your resume and suitability statement will be reviewed against the requirements of the role.
Depending on the role and the size of the candidate pool, this stage may include an initial phone interview.

Interviews – what to expect

The recruitment process aims to uncover the strongest matched individual(s) against the Position Description (PD). We recommend you become very familiar with the PD and be prepared to participate honestly and fully in the interview process.

The interview will generally involve an interview panel consisting of three or more panel members.
Interviews will include behaviour-based questions designed to enable candidates to demonstrate how they've successfully applied the position requirements of the role in their previous work or studies.

Reference checks

We will let you know if your application is deemed suitable to progress to the reference check stage and request referee contact information (if required). Reference checks will be completed either by phone or electronically and we will keep you updated as these progress.

Background checks

If required, background checks may be conducted, including:

National criminal record check
Working With Children check/Ochre Card
Citizen or residency status
Qualifications check/s
Professional Registration/s check/s

Letter of Offer

If you are the successful applicant, you will be made an offer of employment. Information about the terms and conditions of your proposed employment will be included. You will be asked to accept the offer through your Workday candidate profile.

Candidates who are assessed as meeting the requirements for the role but aren't successful in their application may also be offered a place in recruitment pool for future vacancies.

Given the high number of applications received for some roles as well as our commitments to employment practices that are fair, responsive and inclusive, the time for recruitment does vary and can occasionally take longer than expected. Suitability Statement

This is a written statement of no more than 3 A4 pages, introducing yourself and describing how your skills, attributes, experience, qualifications etc. are a match to the position description. This is not required for all positions. However, if requested in the Job Advertisement, we recommend you:

State the Job Number and job title
Demonstrate how you meet each of the Key Position Capabilities listed in the position description
Use examples of your previous experience to support your claims, rather than just presenting a list of facts
Make contact with the vacancy contact person listed in the advertisement, should you have questions on any elements of the PD
Please upload your Suitability Statement as a separate document to your CV.

CV/Resume

This document supports the suitability statement you provide, by highlighting your experience, qualifications and attributes that are relevant to the position you are applying for. We recommend you:

List the most recent qualifications/experience first
Include only information which highlights the position requirements outlined in the PD
Aim to keep your CV to no more than 2-3 pages.

Referee Details

Referee reports are typically obtained on shortlisted applicants. Should you reach this stage of our recruitment process, Flinders will request:

You provide the details of 3 professional referees
1 of the referees is your current or most recent manager (where possible)
As many of the referees you provide have supervised your work in the past
Telephone and email details are provided for each referee.

In some instances, the Selection Panel may wish to obtain feedback from a referee you have not provided in your application. Such references will be conducted with your knowledge and consultation.

FAQs

How long does the recruitment process take?

As a guide, a typical recruitment process at Flinders can take approximately six weeks. Please contact the Recruitment Team if you’d like to check the status of an application.

I have questions about an advertised position. Who should I contact?

You are welcome to contact the nominated contact person on the job advertisement with any questions about the position or feedback on your application. Alternatively, if there is no contact person highlighted on the job advertisement, please contact recruitment@flinders.edu.au.

I am having trouble submitting my application. What should I do?

If you are having trouble submitting your application, or for other Workday trouble-shooting, please contact recruitment@flinders.edu.au.

I applied for a position at Flinders but would now like to withdraw my interest. What should I do?

Please reach out to the contact person listed on the job advertisement in the first instance. Alternately, you can withdraw your application via your candidate portal in Workday or you may email recruitment@flinders.edu.au to let us know.

Can applications be accepted after the closing date?

Late applications are not encouraged but may be accepted by the selection panel under exceptional circumstances, by approval of the selection panel Chairperson. Please contact the contact person listed on the job advertisement or recruitment@flinders.edu.au to discuss your individual circumstances.

Who is responsible for making recruitment decisions?

Where a position is advertised the recruitment process is conducted by a selection panel, usually consisting of staff members within the work unit where the vacancy exists. The panel decide on what the selection process will involve (i.e., interviews, presentations, samples of work). The selection panel Chairperson is responsible for ensuring the decision will adhere to Flinders recruitment-related policies and procedures.

I have not received any feedback about an application I lodged some time ago. Does this mean I have been considered unsuccessful for this position?

We endeavour to respond to all applicants with valuable feedback in a timely manner. If you would like an update on your application, please contact the contact person listed on the job advertisement or email recruitment@flinders@edu.au.

How does the Selection panel decide upon their shortlist of applicants?

The selection panel are looking for applicants who closely match the requirements of the PD advertised with the vacancy. They will use the suitability statement you prepare (if requested) and refer to your CV/resume for further evidence of your suitability.

Carefully preparing these two documents will put you in the best possible position to be shortlisted.

In some instances where there are a high number of applicants who match the requirements of the PD, desirable requirements of the PD or pre-screening processes may be used to narrow down the number of applicants that will progress to interview.

How can I seek feedback during/after the Recruitment Process?

What accommodations do Flinders University offer in their recruitment process? Who do I contact if I have questions?

I do not live in the region in which the position is based. Will my application still be considered?

The primary location of the position will be listed in the advertisement. Please consider whether relocation will suit you/you family circumstances.

Where possible parts of the selection process may be conducted by telephone or video conference. For all academic positions, as well as professional positions above HEO8, you may be brought to the selection process for face-to-face discussions.

Please note: all applicants normally need to hold eligible working rights within Australia to be considered for any vacancy. Some positions may allow for visa sponsorship in instances where the applicant does not hold working rights. If this is the case, it will normally be identified in the job advertisement.

Does Flinders provide funding for relocation where a candidate is moving from interstate or overseas?

Flinders University provides relocation support for academic positions of Level B and above or professional positions ofHEO8 and above. There may be instances where relocation outside of these parameters is available, that will be on a case-by-case basis.

I have been advised by the Selection panel that I am the preferred applicant for a job at Flinders. What happens next?

Congratulations! That is great news! The Recruitment Team will soon issue your Employment Offer. You will be notified when your Employment Offer is ready by email. The Employment Offer will detail pre-employment checks that you will be required to provide prior to commencement such as a National Police Clearance and/or Working with Children check/Ochre Card and COVID vaccination status (if required). The University utilises the Fit2Work platform to manage majority of its pre-employment checks.

What positions require additional screening?

All positions at Flinders University require a National Police Clearance.

If other screening clearances are required (i.e., Working with Children Clearance, Ochre Card, pre-employment medical check etc) it will be stated within the PD and advertisement for each vacancy.

How will Flinders manage my personal information during and after the recruitment process?

All applications are held in accordance with the Flinders University Privacy Policy.
