The single most important value I appreciate about myself and people in general is ‘empathy’. Sri Lankans are known to be hospitable and good-spirited, but one may overlook how empathetic most are. Every kind gesture comes from a place of understanding of that person’s situation and putting oneself into the other’s shoes.
The VC Scholarship is particularly meaningful to me because it recognizes my academic potential and leadership while also making international education more accessible. Receiving this scholarship would significantly reduce the financial burden of studying in Australia allowing me to focus fully on my academic work, research activities, and professional development during my studies.
Australia is internationally recognized for its high-quality higher education system, strong research culture, and practical approach to learning. Universities emphasize interdisciplinary thinking, critical analysis, and real-world application of knowledge, which are essential for addressing complex development challenges.
Coming from Sri Lanka, I am excited about the opportunity to share the rich cultural diversity and strong sense of community that characterizes our society. Sri Lanka is a multicultural country with a long history shaped by different ethnicities, religions, and traditions, which has created a unique cultural identity rooted in hospitality, resilience, and respect for diversity.
One aspect of my culture that I particularly enjoy sharing is our traditions surrounding food and social gatherings. Sri Lankan cuisine reflects the island’s history and cultural influences, and meals are often shared in a communal and welcoming way.
I have always been a cat lady, and at one point, we had 12. Currently, I am stuck with one furball named Simba (because he’s a ginger boy), but trust me, he is a handful! I love him because he brings so much life into our lives, and I love seeing him make my mother smile. (P.S He is her favourite child.)
I would like to mention my 2 of my favourite TV-Series: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ AND ‘Big Little Lies’ (among so many more).
And one film I would consider my comfort movie is ‘The Edge of Seventeen’.
I would just love to order some food and binge a Netflix series in the comfort of my home. If I’m feeling a bit adventurous, I would either go grab a coffee with a mate or make a small excursion into ‘nature’. Or else you will find me at the gym lifting weights I never thought I could.
