Flinders University marked the 50th anniversary of teaching Nutrition and Dietetics with a special celebration event at Flinders City Campus on 22 October 2026 that brought together Nutrition and Dietetics graduates from the past five decades.
When Dietetics began at Flinders, no dietitian held an academic position. Fifty years and 1300 graduates later, the program is still changing lives.
The milestone comes as Flinders marks its 60th anniversary and launches Agenda 2035: Impact. With Purpose. In her keynote address at the celebration, Professor Rebecca Golley said those words "capture our story".
The turning point came in 1988, when Lynne Daniels became the first dietitian in an academic role. Her vision was, "dietetic education for dietitians by dietitians." Enrolments grew from 18 students every second year to more than 120 a year. The department also gained its first dietitian PhD students, its first NHMRC postdoctoral fellow and its first NHMRC grant in the 2000s.
The profession has grown too. Dietitians were once based mainly in hospitals and focused on therapeutic diets. Flinders dietitians now work in community health, aged care, rural services, sport, industry, research and government policy.
Every patient supported, every child given a healthier start and every policy informed creates a ripple. Across five decades, "those ripples become waves".
The next 50 years will bring climate change, food insecurity and an ageing population. The Council of Deans of Nutrition and Dietetics has described the Dietetic roles of the future as knowledge translators, equity champions and changemakers. Dietiticians must remain the trusted voices amid widespread nutrition misinformation. Flinders' goal is to prepare graduates not only for today's roles but to create tomorrow's.
