If you are finding the transition to university challenging, you may want to seek additional support before making the decision to defer. We offer a range of activities and services that can provide you with this support. Please see Transition to Uni for further information.
If you do decide to defer, commencing domestic students can defer most Flinders undergraduate courses until the following year. For example, if you receive an offer to commence study in 2019, you can defer your offer and commence in 2020 instead.
If you are a continuing student who wishes to take a break from your studies, you can apply for a leave of absence.
The following courses cannot be deferred:
In addition to the courses listed above, all internal transfer offers, 1 year honours, TAFE SA dual offers and postgraduate offers (including graduate entry bachelor level courses) cannot be deferred.
If you are an international student you need to contact the International Centre to defer.
Once you have received your SATAC offer letter, if eligible, you can elect to defer your offer through the Flinders Student System.
To access the Student System, you must first:
Instructions on how to access the Student System are located in the Manage My Offer section of MyFlinders
Once you have accessed the Student System and checked your personal details, you can defer your offer via the ‘My Offers’ tab. You will need to select the course to be deferred and click on the ‘Defer’ button. By confirming the selection on the next screen your course offer will be deferred.
You will be able to defer your offer for up to two years, one year at a time. For example, if you receive a 2019 offer, you will be able to defer until 2020. Once you receive enrolment information on taking up your place in 2020, you will be able to defer your new offer until 2021.
If you accept your offer but then decide to defer, you will need to withdraw from any enrolled topics before the topic census date submit an Ask Flinders request for a manual deferral. See Amending your enrolment for details about how to withdraw from topics.
The deadline to defer most courses is the semester 2 census date. However the following competitive courses must be deferred or enrolled in by the lapse date stated on your SATAC offer letter. Please read your offer letter carefully.
After you have successfully deferred your offer, you will be sent a confirmation email within 2 business days.
If you deferred in error or change your mind and wish to enrol instead of deferring, you will need to submit an Ask Flinders request to get your deferral reversed. Please be aware that topic enrolment deadlines apply.
Places in the following courses are highly competitive and if you defer your offer, your current year place will be offered to another applicant. Therefore, if you wish to have your deferral reversed, you will be added to a waitlist. If a place becomes available, you will then be readmitted.
You will be contacted in mid-November of your deferred year with instructions on how to take up your place the following year. For example, if you deferred your 2019 offer, you will be contacted in mid-November 2019 with instructions on how to enrol in 2020.
In the year in which you commence your deferred degree, you can commence in semester 1 or semester 2 (subject to topic availability). This is determined by which topics you enrol in. Please note not all courses will allow you to commence in semester 2 and some courses only allow part-time enrolment if commencing in semester 2. Please seek course advice.
