Curious about success stories after completing a Costume Design degree? We spoke to Alex Stephens, winner of the 2021 HomeStart Costume Graduate of the Year award.
Her Aurora costume collection included the gown and headpiece created for a reimagining of The Sleeping Beauty ballet as a 1920s film drama.
Nowadays Alex works for the Australian Ballet, living the dream and creating beautiful costumes.
"Going on a study tour to America was a real highlight of my studies. I was lucky enough to go to New York and Los Angeles as part of the tour and learn about theatre and film costuming. One particularly stand-out moment was going to a quick-change workshop run by a real Broadway dresser. We were told all about the little costume secrets that help run a show. In this workshop we were also lucky enough to meet the Wicked Elphaba understudy (who coincidentally happened to be on for our Wicked show). On top of this we also got to visit the Wicked costume store. We were like kids in a candy store!"
"Working on principle costumes for classic ballets such as Cinderella, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland - the highlight being a re-creation of a long lost Kitri costume for our remounting of Don Quixote in our 60th Anniversary year.”
"I was lucky enough to get my current position through an elective topic that allowed me to do a work experience placement at the Australian Ballet. After a week of work experience, I was offered a position with the ballet for 5 weeks work and I’ve been here ever since. It’s been 4 years and I still learn something new at the Ballet every day."
"I plan to expand my knowledge further by learning more about hand embroidery and couture practices, but mostly I hope to continue working at the Ballet and creating magical moments for our audiences."
