Criminology. What is it? And where can it take you?
We have all seen the different TV shows, CSI, NCIS, and Law and Order, but these shows didn’t really show the right perspectives, and many believe that’s what it’ll be like when starting a Criminology degree. Reality check, it’s not.
Criminology is one of the social sciences, not quiet law and not quite science. Its focuses different aspects of true crime, how crime affects us (victimology), the criminal justice system, and how fictional shows change our perspectives on what Criminology and crime is. As this world is ever changing and evolving the way we learn about crime and justice needs to adapt, there are specific degrees that pairs with a Bachelor of Criminology to provide students with the opportunity to complete a combined degree simultaneously. They may include, Forensic and Analytical Sciences, Psychological Sciences, IT (Cybercrime and networks), Law, International Relations, and many more.
Now the important question. What job can I get if I study Criminology? It depends on what you’re passionate about and what you would like to pursue as a career. Some students might want to work as a police officer either state or federal or for the government either in the courts or intelligences. The elective topics offered throughout the degree can help shape your future, there are topics in victimology, cybercrime, forensics, psychology, policy and more.
Many of the job opportunities for a Criminology graduate may include:
Not all students pursue any of these career pathways, but it provides knowledge in what you could possibly do in the future after graduating.

Now, we have all heard of those academic and social clubs at universities, however, did you know that Flinders have their very own Criminology association. How crazy!
