The MDRI is home to various state of the art equipment and facilities. Some of these are listed below.
Biomechanics & Implants Lab
Our research lab includes a six degree of freedom hexapod robot, Instron materials testing system and CellScale BioTester.
Flinders Surgical Lab
The Flinders Surgical Lab at Tonsley is a state-of-the-art facility where surgeons learn to use the latest products and equipment.
Large Volume Micro CT Imaging Facility
A large volume cabinet Computed Tomography (CT) system enabling the 3D-scanning of large and heavy samples for research and industrial applications.
Digital Health Design Lab/ Medical Simulation Lab
In collaboration with Cisco, this lab promotes Medical Simulation, Digital Health Design, and IoT in Health.
Multimodal Recording Facility
This facility contains a Faraday cage and an acoustic and lighting controlled room.
PPE Testing Facility
A dedicated test facility proviging research and testing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including surgical masks, respirators and medical gowns.
Medical Device Prototyping Facility
We have two labs dedicated to rapid medical device prototype development incorporating the ANFF medical device fabrication facility.
Rehabilitation & Motion Analysis Lab
Equipment designed for motion capture and analysis includng cameras, force plates and an instrumented staircase.

Flinders Surgical Lab
The Surgical Skills Training Facility is a 250 square metre facility worth $2.1 million. The facility offers surgical training workshops of small and large groups (up to 45 people). Our peer-driven workshops are taught by surgeons and hosted by manufacturers and distributors of surgical implants. We aim to educate surgeons on the use and installation of new products, fixation techniques and other devices.

Large Volume Micro CT Imaging Facility
The Nikon XT H 225ST (Nikon Metrology, Tring, UK) is a large volume cabinet Computed Tomography (CT) system enabling the 3D-scanning of large and heavy samples for research and industrial applications. This includes whole machine parts, excised human and animal limbs/segments, prosthetic devices, batteries, plants, fossils, vertebrates and 3D composite materials.

Multimodal Recording Facility

PPE Testing Facility
Test Labs is a dedicated test facility located at Tonsley . The facility was established through funding received from Flinders’ Foundation and the South Australian Government through the Research Commercialisation and Startup Fund.

Medical Device Prototyping Facility
The Medical Device Prototyping Facility specialises in the research and development of general medical devices and assistive technologies, instruments, software and systems for understanding, diagnosing, treating and monitoring medical conditions.
It is home to the Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP) an ideas incubator fostering collaborations between researchers, industry and end-users.
The lab also houses the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) medical device fabrication facility.

Rehabilitation & Motion Analysis Lab
The Rehabilitation and Motion Analysis Laboratory incorporates a 10 camera Vicon system (Vicon Bonita 10, 1MP Optical Camera, 250 fps) for motion capture and analysis, 4 AMTI force plates (AMTI OR6-7-1K-SYS Force Platforms) within a flexible grid arrangement for flexible ground reaction force measurement, a ceiling mounted hoist (rated at 250kg) to provide assistance for partial weight bearing activities, and a 16-channel combined wireless EMG and tri-axial accelerometer system for muscle activity measurement.
The Laboratory also includes a custom made, adjustable instrumented staircase, enabling motion and kinetic analysis of a wide range of typical activities (level gait, sit-to-stand, stair ascent, stair descent, deep knee bend, etc), including dual-camera 2D gait recording with our autonomous robot.
The lab is open for research, clinical and teaching purposes and we encourage you to contact us if you are interested in accessing these facilities.
