Along the way, Nicola also found a sense of community. She connected with teachers, support staff and classmates who encouraged her and made her feel at home. One student in particular became a close friend who she now calls her ‘uni mum’.

“We still catch up for a coffee around campus. Having someone like that made such a difference.”

By the time she finished the program, Nicola felt confident, prepared and ready to begin the degree she had once thought was impossible.

“Finishing Foundation Studies was one of the best things I have ever done. I walked into my paramedicine degree already knowing how uni worked and with friendly faces around me. That confidence was huge.”

Now well into her degree, Nicola encourages anyone who thinks they have missed their chance to take a closer look at the program.

“There is almost always a way in. If you want this and you put in the effort, you will find your place at uni.”
