Although the standard duration is listed as 0.5 years full-time, this course is delivered over a minimum of 12 months part-time, with topics completed in sequence.
The Graduate Certificate in Registered Nurse (RN) Prescribing is designed for experienced nurses ready to take the next step in their clinical career. In 12 months, you’ll build the knowledge and capability to prescribe scheduled medicines safely and apply evidence-based decision-making in real-world settings.
Designed for experienced nurses, this qualification builds the knowledge and clinical capability required for Registered Nurse prescribing endorsement. In 12 months, you’ll develop skills in therapeutics, clinical decision-making and safe prescribing practice, aligned to professional standards. Expand your scope of practice, strengthen your clinical confidence, and play a greater role in delivering timely, effective patient care.
You will complete 2 core topics building from foundations in safe prescribing through to complex therapeutics and application in practice. Students will have a dedicated Course Coordinator, and a Topic Coordinator for each topics, and can engage in self directed learning with discusson forums that can fit around shift work. Study is structured for completion in 12 months part-time alongside professional practice.

Registered nurse prescribing is supported through an NMBA endorsement pathway for designated registered nurse prescriber, strengthening workforce capability in primary care, aged care and rural health settings where service gaps and access delays are most pronounced.

Dr Bridget Henderson

Bridget is a Senior Lecturer at Flinders University with primary expertise in emergency nursing. She brings extensive hands-on experience to her teaching, providing invaluable insights to her students. Her research interests centre on nurse education, particularly in fostering students' evaluative judgment, helping them identify the characteristics of quality work, and guiding them in benchmarking their performance to promote reflective practice.

Entry requires a recognised nursing qualification, current AHPRA registration, and relevant clinical experience. Applicants typically have at least 2 years’ full-time equivalent practice. Final eligibility is assessed at application, with flexibility for demonstrated professional capability.
No. RN prescribing is dependent on workplace governance and clinical support. Prescribing must occur within approved organisational frameworks and under oversight arrangements, such as a medical officer or nurse practitioner, as required by regulatory standards.
Completion does not guarantee promotion or salary changes. However, it strengthens your capability for advanced practice roles and may support progression depending on workplace structure, funding models, and available prescribing positions.
The qualification prepares you for a pathway to RN prescribing endorsement, expanding clinical capability in medicines management. Actual scope depends on employer governance, role design, and regulatory approval within your practice setting.
Ongoing endorsement by the NMBA is contingent upon the designated RN prescriber complying with the following requirements:
Yes. The program is delivered fully online, and no set class times, designed specifically for practising nurses balancing shift work and study.
No mandatory clinical placement is required. Learning is applied through workplace-based assessment tasks and case studies that reflect real clinical decision-making contexts.
