Indigenous Australian Engineering School at Flinders Tonsley Campus

  • The Indigenous Australian Engineering School (IAES) is a free, hands-on program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students who want to explore engineering, technology and how to make a difference.
  • Spend four unforgettable days - 17–20 November 2025 Flinders at Tonsley - at Flinders University’s cutting-edge Tonsley campus learning how engineers shape the world - from clean energy and sustainable cities to robotics, health tech and smart manufacturing.
  • You’ll live in, join design challenges, go on industry visits, and meet Indigenous role models working in the field.
  • No experience needed - just an interest in maths, science or solving real-world problems.

Who can apply?

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students across South Australia and beyond.
  • In Year 11 or 12 in 2025
  • Curious about maths, science, technology or building things
  • Keen to explore uni or future careers
  • Selection is based on your interest and motivation, not just your grades.
  • Applications close 30 September 2025

Why Engineering?

  • Engineers are creators, problem-solvers and community builders. They design solutions for better roads, cleaner water, stronger homes, new tech and more.
  • Right now, Australia needs more Indigenous engineers to lead projects that impact our mob and our future.
  • If you like thinking big, building things, or helping your community - engineering might be the perfect path.

What’s included in the Flinders IAES program?

  • 4-day, live in experience (Sunday to Thursday)
  • Held at Flinders at Tonsley, our world-class innovation campus
  • All travel, meals and accommodation provided
  • Hands-on engineering workshops and design challenges
  • Site visits to real engineering companies
  • Mentoring from Indigenous students and professionals
  • Meet engineers and discover uni pathways
  • Build friendships and confidence in a safe, supported space

Scholarship and support

All IAES participants will be eligible for:

  • Engineering Aid Australia Continuing School Scholarships (Years 11–12)
  • Tertiary Scholarships if you go on to study engineering at university

These scholarships help you stay strong in your studies and support your future career goals.

About Engineering Aid Australia

Engineering Aid Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that has supported Indigenous students for nearly 30 years.

They fund the IAES program and provide scholarships to help students finish school and go on to study engineering or related fields.

Their mission is to open up opportunities, inspire young people, and build stronger communities through education and engineering.

Raphael Thomas, past IAES participant and final year engineering student at Flinders University

“I completed the IAES in 2019 when I was in Year 11. Up till that point, I was unsure of what I wanted to do. I knew I was leaning towards something with a math or science focus and was recommended to look into engineering. I didn't know anyone who did engineering, and the information out there felt very general and vague.

IAES answered my questions about the field of engineering, from day-to-day work to different avenues that my career could follow. It opened me up to different types of engineering, with visits to major employers in industry. Following the school, I applied for a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Flinders, and I am now completing my final year. I have also gained paid internships through the IAES network.

The summer school was the most formative event in directing my career path, giving me the confidence to pursue a career in engineering . To any student who is unsure about what they want to do or is thinking about a career in science and engineering, I'd highly recommend attending the IAES.”
