Students are invited to submit their best ideas to the Flinders Thought Experiment Competition!
7th July, 2025 at 6pm.
Open to Australian residents aged no more than 16 years (on 7th July 2024). Group submissions are permitted. In such cases, the group must nominate the recipient of any book prize (e.g. the school).
Prize entries will consist of a description of a thought experiment of no more than 300 words. Along with this, the student may, if they wish, add a note of no more than 200 words explaining what they think the thought experiment shows. It is anticipated that most entries will be text based. However, entries can also include images or diagrams.
Email your submission as a pdf or docx attachment to Dr Tom Cochrane at tom.cochrane@flinders.edu.au with the subject heading ‘Thought experiment prize’. The email should include your full name, date of birth, school, and a relevant teacher’s email address (who can be included as an addressee). General queries about the competition may also be sent to this address.
We plan to make the winning entry into a short animated film which will be put onto YouTube along with a commentary by a professional philosopher. The winner and additional runners up will also receive a book prize. By entering the prize, entrants agree that their entries may be edited by staff at Flinders University and publicised online.
We aim to let entrants know the outcome within 4 weeks of the competition deadline.
