Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a registered nurse to be admitted into the postgraduate nursing programs? keyboard_arrow_up

Apart from the Diabetes Management and Education course (where registration in another relevant profession is required), you will be required to have current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to be admitted into the postgraduate nursing programs. One exception is international students, who can be registered overseas for entry into the Master of Nursing (2-year program).

Please note: there is also no longer a minimum requirement of 1-year Full Time Equivalent (FTE) as a registered nurse to study our graduate certificates and diplomas.

I have completed a Graduate Diploma in Nursing at another institution, am I eligible for credit in the Diploma or Master at Flinders? keyboard_arrow_up

You may be eligible for credit towards your course depending on the alignment between the learning outcomes of your prior studies compared with the topics offered at Flinders. You will be able to apply for credit once admitted into the program information about credit is available here.

Can I exit with the Diploma or Certificate if I am unable to finish the Master? keyboard_arrow_up

Many of our postgraduate courses are nested, meaning you have flexible entry and exit points. If you enrol in a masters and do not complete it – but do complete the nested graduate certificate or graduate diploma – you may exit with that qualification.

I am an international student; can I study postgraduate nursing? keyboard_arrow_up

Yes, we have a 2-year program specifically for international students named the Master of Nursing.

Can I study online? keyboard_arrow_up

Yes, all postgraduate nursing programs can be completed online. However, some courses do require attendance at work-integrated learning and/or placements.

Can I study part time? keyboard_arrow_up

Yes. Part-time study is encouraged, especially if you are working more than 20 hours per week.

How many hours a week is a full-time study load? keyboard_arrow_up

A full-time study load (18 units per semester) is the equivalent of a full-time job – you should allow on average 36 hours each week for classes, independent study, assignment preparation and other learning activities specific to your topic. Read this guide to starting your studies well here.

How many hours a week is a part-time study load? keyboard_arrow_up

A part-time study load (less than 18 units per semester) can be calculated as a percentage of a full-time study load based upon your enrolments. For example, if you are enrolled in 2x 4.5 unit topics in a semester, you should allow on average 18 hours per week for classes, independent study, assignment preparation and other learning activities specific to your topic.

Can I fast track my study, or complete topics outside of semester time? keyboard_arrow_up

No, topics are only available within standard semester times, some topics are offered twice per year (e.g. semester one and semester 2).

Can I choose to study face-to-face? Can I choose a combination of online and face-to-face? keyboard_arrow_up

Some topics have a choice of face-to-face or online studies – please check the timetable for details. You are able to choose any combination of online and/or face-to-face topic enrolment – with the exception of international students who need to be aware of any visa requirements.

How do I apply? keyboard_arrow_up

Applications are completed via SATAC.

Visit: https://www.satac.edu.au/

Where can you do your placement? keyboard_arrow_up

You can undertake your placement at a wide variety of public and private providers across South Australia and interstate. For some students, this may be in their own workplace. Please note: for the Emergency and Critical Care specialisations, students must have employer support to undertake the placement in their workplace.

Can I do my placement in my current workplace? keyboard_arrow_up

Yes. In most instances, you can undertake your placement in your place of work, which means you can continue to earn a salary while you study. This is called Work Integrated Learning (WIL).

Can I study postgraduate midwifery? keyboard_arrow_up

Postgraduate studies for midwives are available through the following research pathways - Master of Science, Master of Health & Clinical Research and PhD. Through these courses, topics pertinent and important to midwives and reproductive health and childbirth can be explored.

Students will work with experienced midwifery staff to develop their supervised research project. Current midwifery postgraduate students are local, national, and international covering varied clinical challenges, workforce issues, education and research dissemination utilising both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
