Transition to Remote Area Nursing

Designed for nurses preparing to work in remote communities, this six-day course builds the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required for remote area nursing practice. Grounded in advanced clinical practice, cultural safety, and primary health care principles, the course explores the geographical, environmental, and cultural factors that shape health and healthcare delivery in remote and Indigenous settings. Participants develop capabilities in clinical reasoning, assessment and management, communication, and evidence-based practice, while gaining experience in the Remote Area Nurse (RAN) Model of Consultation and practical skills in triage, plastering, and suturing.

Learning outcomes

• Examine the expanded scope of practice for remote area nurses with an emphasis on advanced clinical responsibilities, collaborative multidisciplinary approaches, and the autonomy required in remote healthcare environments.
• Develop cultural sensitivity and communication strategies that facilitate effective engagement with Indigenous communities, fostering trust and understanding in healthcare interactions.
