Ask Flinders

What is UX Design in an engineering context? keyboard_arrow_up

UX (User Experience) Design focuses on how people interact with systems and technology. In this major, you’ll study the engineering behind these systems — combining design, data and technology to create products that are both functional and human-centred.

Do I need a design background to study this major? keyboard_arrow_up

No. You’ll start with foundational topics in UX, design thinking and digital systems. These build your technical and creative skills progressively, even if you haven’t studied design before.

Can I study this major online? keyboard_arrow_up

Engineering Science itself is not an Online degree. Some topics are available to study online, though certain lab-based or studio components may require attendance at the Tonsley or City Campus for practical experience.

What industries can I work in after graduation? keyboard_arrow_up

Graduates work across tech, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, sustainability and creative industries. Roles span UX design, product development, digital innovation, and human-centred engineering.

How does this major prepare me for future technologies? keyboard_arrow_up

You’ll study areas shaping the next decade - including Industry 4.0, robotics, artificial intelligence, and sustainable design - ensuring you can adapt to emerging careers and technologies.

Is there an industry placement opportunity? keyboard_arrow_up

Yes. You’ll have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through project-based learning, collaborations with industry partners, and optional placements during your degree.

What makes this major different from other design programs? keyboard_arrow_up

Unlike traditional design courses, this major sits within engineering — giving you the technical knowledge, analytical thinking and systems perspective to design with purpose, precision and impact.

What kind of projects will I work on? keyboard_arrow_up

You’ll complete hands-on projects that simulate real-world industry challenges — from designing interactive interfaces to developing sustainable product concepts and working with robotics and automation.
