What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

topics focusing on the fundamental science underpinning the later years of study including study in mathematics, physics, programming, electronics and professional skills.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

topics expanding on the fundamental knowledge gained in first year with study in engineering design, data science, quantum physics, classical physics plus more computer programming and mathematics. Students are also introduced to the professional skills required to work in secure and sensitive areas.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

topics in electronic engineering including electronic circuits, communication systems, electrical circuits and electrical machines

advanced physics including electromagnetics, electromagnetic waves, thermodynamics, energy systems and nuclear and statistical physics

study in the methods of heuristic optimisation (artificial intelligence)

study in electromagnetic technologies, systems and security.

Honours year

A typical honours year may include:

a major project and industry placement
further study in quantum physics, solid state physics, optoelectronics, signal processing, engineering project management
a capstone topic looking at systems and security in the information age.

Practical experience

The degree provides you with practical experience, helping you graduate work-ready.

You'll have the opportunity to undertake a 12-week industry placement as part of your degree, which enables you to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems.
Gain hands-on exposure to the cutting-edge equipment and facilities of Flinders University’s new technology precinct at Tonsley.
Undertake an integrated high-technology design consulting project, putting what you learn into practice.

Pre-requisite pathway

Students who do not meet these prerequisites are advised to commence study in another degree with no prerequisites such as the Bachelor of Engineering Science, and complete MATH1701 to meet the prerequisite. Once you have completed this, you can apply for an internal transfer and subsequently apply for any credit that you may be eligible for from the topics you have already completed.*
