This course is accredited by the Paramedicine Board of Australia, in accordance with the 2020 accreditation standards for paramedicine as stipulated by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, for registration as a paramedic in Australia.
Throughout the Honours year, you'll engage in advanced coursework and research, developing skills that will set you apart in the field of paramedicine. You'll have the opportunity to work closely with experienced research mentors, gaining valuable insights and experience in conducting scholarly research.

Andrew Makkink
Andrew is the Paramedicine Discipline Group Lead at Flinders University. He has a background in public, private, and remote healthcare settings in South Africa and Australia. Andrew holds a PhD in Emergency Medicine, with research focused on improving patient handover between paramedics and emergency departments. His passion lies in paramedic education, particularly simulation-based teaching and assessment.

Shannon Macfarlane
Shannon is a Senior Lecturer in Paramedicine at Flinders University and an active frontline paramedic with SA Ambulance Service. She is pursuing a PhD in academic coaching for paramedic students and is passionate about reflective practice and lifelong learning. Shannon coordinates and teaches key paramedicine topics, supporting students in their transition to the profession.
Senior Lecturer
James Pearce
James is a Senior Lecturer and the Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Paramedicine (Honours) program. He is a registered paramedic, educator, and researcher with frontline experience at SA and NSW Ambulance. James has taught paramedicine, nursing, and medicine across multiple universities and is a Fellow of both the Australasian College of Paramedicine. He continues to work clinically while supporting students in their academic and professional development.
By collaborating with these esteemed organisations, you'll gain valuable insights and practical experience, preparing you for a successful career in paramedicine both in Australia and internationally.
Perform approximately 300 hours of emergency ambulance placements with SA Ambulance Service in the second and third years to consolidate your clinical and theoretical understanding in real-life situations.
Clinical placements will be performed with SA Ambulance Service regional teams at nominated locations in regional South Australia. Availability may vary from year to year, but core locations include:

Strong results in your Research Project B subject along with your Year 12 results can be considered for entry.
By using three of your best Year 12 grades, you can also gain a place in your course of choice.
Your school’s recommendation about your academic performance may be considered as part of your admission.
If you’re studying at another university, you may be able to transfer to Flinders based on your Yr 12 results, current GPA or other factors.
Even if you didn’t finish high school (Year 12), you may be able to study at Flinders through your TAFE/VET qualification.
You may be able to complete a TAFE SA course and have guaranteed entry into Flinders.
The TAFE/VET stud you’ve already done may be able to be used as credit towards a Flinders’ course.
The Foundation Studies Program is free and guarantees entry to a range of degrees.
The STAT is a 2-hour multiple choice test that assesses your abilities.
If you completed Year 12 more than two years ago you can still use your results to apply.

This course is only available to applicants eligible under the remote and outer regional sub quota.
You must submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC within 10 working days of your application confirming you have lived in remote or outer regional areas of Australia (Remoteness Classifications RA3 to RA5) for:
* at least two years out of the past six years, or
* a total of five years since starting primary school in a remote and/or outer regional areas (RA3 to RA5).
This is assessed based on an applicant's primary residential address.
Applicants can check their eligibility in accordance with the definition above using the Australian Government's Health Workforce Locator. Enter the address you wish to search for using the 'ASGS Remoteness Area' '2021'. As part of a transition year for 2026 entry, applicants can also be assessed against the ‘ASGS Remoteness Area’ ‘2016’ if not eligible under the 2021 layer. For 2027 entry, applicants will only be assessed using the 'ASGS Remoteness Area' '2021' layer.
Online theoretical learning allows flexible access to lectures and coursework. The course enables eligible students from regional South Australia to undertake the degree without needing to relocate to Adelaide.
Students will perform all coursework online and attend the Bedford Park campus for compulsory practical activities to meet the practical learning requirements. Clinical placements will be performed at various regional locations throughout Australia.
Yes – a Bachelor of Paramedicine can be an excellent pathway to a medical career. The Paramedicine degree not only provides strong academic preparation but also gives you an advantage through the Flinders Graduates Reserved sub-quota—increasing your chances of gaining a place in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.
