First year

A typical first year may include:

You'll be studying alongside engineering students of all disciplines and completing core topics in electronics, professional skills, engineering design, engineering programming, engineering physics and materials, engineering mechanics, and mathematics

Second year

A typical second year may include:

Focussing on civil engineering with core topics in mechanics and structures, fluid mechanics, infrastructure systems engineering, civil engineering design, engineering geology and geomechanics, structural engineering, engineering mathematics, and geographical information systems.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

topics in engineering project management together with studies that look at working as a professional engineer

One semester in the industry with our national best-practice 20-week industry placement.

Fourth Honours year

A typical honours year may include:

A return to Tonsley to complete a major civil engineering honours thesis allowing high-performing students to progress to a higher degree by research

Topics in advanced civil engineering design, and standards, ethics and compliance

design of a major piece of infrastructure

a selection of electives in allied science and engineering areas.

Fifth Honours year

A typical masters year may include:

Undertake a research methods and honours research project.

Elective subjects including cybersecurity for connected systems, financial performance, supply chains and innovation

You'll undertake a 20-week industry placement as part of your degree. One of the longest work placements offered in Australia, it enables you to work alongside professional engineers tackling real-world problems.

Pre-requisite pathway

Students who do not meet these prerequisites are advised to commence study in another degree with no prerequisites such as the Bachelor of Engineering Science, and complete MATH1701 to meet the prerequisite. Once you have completed this, you can apply for an internal transfer and subsequently apply for any credit that you may be eligible for from the topics you have already completed.*
