Nurse Practitioner

Overview

This course aims to meet the needs of extended practice nurses working in a range of healthcare settings by developing skills and knowledge that prepare them for their advanced practice role within their scope of practice and the context of that practice. The Master of Nurse Practitioner is fully online with placements undertaken in person at a health service near you, or as work integrated learning within your place of work.

You will be provided with the opportunity to:

develop extended nursing knowledge and clinical practice skills necessary to provide effective comprehensive health care to particular populations of health consumers.
integrate and apply the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge required to participate effectively in the planning, implementation and management of health care programs and services develop an advanced level of understanding of the legal, ethical and political dimensions of practice to provide leadership within nursing and their specialty area of practice.
acquire research skills and apply these to the resolution and improvement of health outcomes for consumers of nursing practice across a range of practice contexts.

Upon completion of this Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) accredited course, graduates are eligible to apply to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Potential students should note that course completion is only one of the requirements for endorsement and also refer to the full requirements for endorsement as indicated in the NMBA Registration standard: Endorsement as a nurse practitioner.

Entry requirements

In accordance with the Australian Nursing Midwifery Council Standards and Criteria for the accreditation of Nursing and Midwifery Courses, applicants must:

hold a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent; and
hold a postgraduate qualification in a specialist nursing field relevant to their advanced nursing practice; and
have current registration as a nurse in Australia; and
have a minimum of four years full-time equivalent (FTE) experience as a registered nurse, which includes two years FTE in a specialist clinical field; and two years FTE at an advanced practice level* (within the last six years) in the same clinical field; and
provide a completed and signed Supernumerary Integrated Professional Practice (SIPP) form (DOCX) as evidence of approval from an employing organisation to complete 300 hours of supernumerary professional practice and supervisor availability and suitability.

Advanced nursing practice (ANP): ANP is a continuum along which nurses develop their professional knowledge, clinical reasoning and judgement, skills and behaviours to higher levels of capability (that is recognisable). Nurses practising at an advanced level incorporate professional leadership, education and research into their clinically based practice. Their practice is effective and safe. They work within a generalist or specialist context and they are responsible and accountable in managing people who have complex health care requirements.

Advanced nursing practice is a level of practice and not a role. It is acknowledged that advanced nursing practice is specific to the individual within their context of practice.
