A range of programs with limited places may be available in public and private hospitals to assist graduate registered nurses in their first year of practice, with clinical rotations, preceptorship, and educational support throughout their progression.

Professional recognition / accreditation

This degree is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council until 22/12/2025. Graduates of this degree are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as registered nurses.

The professional experience placements are fantastic. I did four weeks full-time on a ward in a hospital. That was by itself worth everything else I had done in the degree so far, and we do three more of them. Twenty two weeks in total

What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

an introduction to the nursing profession, independent learning and professional practice
core topics in Indigenous health and cultural safety, psychosocial perspectives of health care, physical dimensions of being human, and dimensions of physical and mental health
professional experience placement topics in contexts of nursing and primary health care, and applied science in professional practice.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

core topics in understanding people and the healthcare environment, pathophysiology and pharmacology, dynamics of practice, clinical governance and practice improvement, and integrating theory and practice
professional experience placement topics in professionalism in action, and managing care of clients in different settings.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

core topics in dynamics of practice, and transition to professional practice professional experience
placement topics in advanced decision-making and practice, and transition to professional practice.

Professional experience placements prepare you for the workplace, both simulated in state-of-the-art laboratories and in clinical venues in rural and metropolitan South Australia.

Rural and remote sub-quotas

An annual subquota is available for applicants from rural and remote areas. To be considered for the rural and remote subquota applicants must apply to SATAC in the normal way.

Applicants must also, within 10 working days after submitting the SATAC application, submit a Statutory Declaration to SATAC which confirms that they have lived in non-metropolitan areas of Australia (Remoteness Classifications RA2 to RA5) for at least 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively, from birth (i.e. during any period of their life). A Statutory Declaration form can be downloaded here.

Additional entry requirements

Before commencing study to become a registered nurse, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) requires you to demonstrate a high level of English language proficiency.

To do this, applicants must do one of the following:

Declare English is your primary language and before the course start date, you will have satisfactorily completed at least six years of schooling in English in one of the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United States, Canada, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom. At least two of the six years must be at a secondary school level, OR
Undertake an approved English language proficiency test no more than one year before the course start date and achieve specified minimum test results as indicated in the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Example: minimum of Academic IELTS 7.0 overall and 7.0 in Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening.
Acceptable tests are: IELTS (Academic), OET (Nursing), PTE (Academic),
OR
Declare you hold current registration as an enrolled nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency – Nursing and Midwifery (AHPRA).

When you graduate and apply for registration as a registered nurse in Australia, you will also need to meet the English language skills registration standard of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

English language pathways

If you don’t meet our English language entry requirements and need to improve your English language proficiency, you can do so through Flinders University Academy – or our approved English Language Instruction Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) providers.

This means that you can attend the required English language tuition at approved ELICOS providers and gain direct entry into university without an IELTS or TOEFL test.
