As a kid, Andrew Kinyua had his heart set on being a Jedi…When he realised that might not happen, the 22-year-old swapped The Force for finance and decided to study a Bachelor of Commerce at Flinders University.
Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Andrew says it was his first job as an assistant at a consultancy firm that cemented his passion for a career in commerce.
“I just love business,” he says. “I love the cunning and strategy involved in operating in the market, and the driven mindset that is needed to operate in the business world.”
It was the international reputation of the commerce degree at Flinders University that saw him make the move to Australia last August.
Andrew’s mum Joyce Kinyua also chose to pursue study at Flinders, completing her post-graduate nursing qualification in May this year. She continues to inspire Andrew to study and pursue his dreams.
“Any time I feel like the work is too much, I think of my mum and say to myself, if she's 40-something and still pressing on, so can I,” Andrew says.
When he is not hitting the books, Andrew likes to sketch and hang out at the Tav with friends or sit in his favourite Flinders nook and soak up some current tunes from Thundercats, Kendrick Lamar and Kids See Ghosts
“There are some chairs right under the Tav where you can sit and look off into the distance. I can sit there with music and a book for hours,” he says.
Once he has completed his studies Andrew says he hopes to establish his own business, possibly an animation studio.
“One day I’d love to run a business of my own, and my degree at Flinders will give me the skills I need to be adept and succeed in the world of trade and commerce.”
